PhD Position in Experimental Low Energy Particle Physics
Start Date By arrangement
Employment Relationship 100%, fixed-term
Project description
The n2EDM experiment searches for the electric dipole moment of the neutron, providing a sensitive probe of physics beyond the Standard Model and of new sources of CP violation. The University of Bern is a long-standing member of the neutron EDM collaboration, with past and ongoing contributions to the development and operation of experimental hardware, data analysis, simulations, and the investigation and control of systematic effects.
The position is based at the University of Bern at the Albert Einstein Center for Fundamental Physics (AEC) and the Laboratory for High Energy Physics (LHEP) and involves regular experimental work at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, where the n2EDM experiment is operated.
Tasks
The successful candidate will join the Fundamental Neutron and Precision Physics Group at AEC/LHEP and work on the n2EDM experimental program.
The work will be mostly focused on data analysis and statistical studies, Monte Carlo simulations, and the quantitative investigation of systematic effects.
The student will also actively participate in data-taking shifts, operation and monitoring of the experiment, and related experimental activities at PSI
Profile
Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, an MSc degree in physics. A strong interest in experimental physics, precision measurements, data analysis, and computational methods is expected. Experience with programming, Monte Carlo simulations and statistical data analysis would be an advantage.
Your Benefits
- International reputation
- Strong research infrastructure and international network
- Collaborative environment and ambitious team
- Healthy corporate culture and good working atmosphere
