Angebotszusammenfassung
The University of Southampton invites applications for a Research Fellow in Climate Simulation within the School of Ocean and Earth Science. Based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, this postdoctoral role supports the UKRI NERC-funded FACT project, which develops an AI-enhanced Reduced Order Earth System Model for efficient climate projections. Key responsibilities include advancing the reduced-order model component to produce latitudinal climate projections and generating large ensembles of simulations using Bayesian statistical methods. The candidate will also integrate AI approaches for spatial climate projections. The position is initially offered until March 31, 2028, with potential extension based on grant success. Salary is £45,641. Benefits include pension membership, generous annual leave, and comprehensive family leave arrangements. The university emphasizes an inclusive environment, holding a silver Athena SWAN award.

Projektbeschreibung
We invite applications for a postdoctoral position at the University of Southampton, based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. The successful applicant will join the UKRI NERC funded Fast and Artificially intelligent Climate projection Tool (FACT) project. This project is developing a novel AI-enhanced Reduced Order Earth System Model to produce observationally constrained climate projections at a far lower computational cost than existing complex Earth System Models, and with greater predictive ability than existing reduced order climate models.
The successful applicant will facilitate the development of a new modelling framework, in which a Reduced Order Earth System Model is combined with an AI approach for developing spatial climate projections. This position is primarily concerned with continuing development of the Reduced Order climate Model component producing latitudinal climate projections, and producing very-large ensembles of observationally constrained simulations utilising Bayesian statistical methods. The successful applicant with also work to combine the reduced order model with an AI approach to generate spatial climate projections.
The position is based in the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences, in collaboration with team members in the Schools of Mathematical Sciences and Electronic and Computer Sciences, and external partners.
The position is offered until 31/03/2028 in the first instance, with possible extension subject to successful grant capture.
Working at the University of Southampton gives you access to a wide range of benefits in addition to our competitive rates of pay. Our core benefits include pension scheme membership; a generous annual leave allowance (supplemented by University closure days and public holidays) and excellent family leave arrangements (including maternity, paternity, adoption and parental leave).
As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work. We welcome candidates form any and all backgrounds, who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment. As a founding signatory of the Athena SWAN charter, and holder of a silver award, we’re committed to improving equality.
