Master's Thesis
Resource Estimation for Fault-tolerant Quantum Algorithms
Ref. 2026_020
Motivation
Fault-tolerant quantum computing architectures envisioned for the next decade differ fundamentally from current near-term devices. They involve numbers of operations that exceed those of today’s quantum algorithms by orders of magnitude, and they rely on a different underlying instruction set. As a result:
We currently cannot directly compile quantum circuits for these future machines.
The resource requirements of fault-tolerant quantum algorithms, such as total error, runtime, and number of qubits, cannot be computed exactly.
The goal of resource estimation is to approximate the computational resources required by quantum algorithms without explicitly compiling them. Through resource estimation, we can assess which algorithms are feasible, identify the dominant bottlenecks, and guide the optimization of both quantum algorithms and the underlying architectures.
Why Join Us?
You will join a world-class research environment and collaborate closely with experienced researchers at IBM Research, and have access to state-of-the-art quantum hardware and software platforms, as well as high-performance classical computing resources. Our environment encourages innovation, and we actively support students in filing patents and publishing in top conferences and journals.
Project Description
In this project, the student will work on resource estimation for fault-tolerant quantum computing architectures targeted by IBM over the next decade. The goal is to develop and apply resource-estimation tools to evaluate the feasibility of quantum algorithms under realistic architectural and error-correction assumptions.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in Python programming (scientific computing or tooling development).
A background in physics, mathematics, or computer science.
Preferably: familiarity with quantum computing (such as quantum algorithms, quantum error correction, Qiskit,...).
Excellent communication skills in English.
Diversity & Work Environment
IBM is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace. You will join an open, multicultural research environment that values different perspectives and supports flexible working arrangements. Our goal is to help all genders and backgrounds thrive professionally while maintaining a healthy work–life balance.
