Its mission is to provide fundamental knowledge of the biology of aging: elucidating the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in order to define new approaches for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of age-associated conditions including metabolic disease, diabetes, cardiovascular and renal disease, and neurodegeneration. The cluster brings together research groups from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital of Cologne, alongside partner institutions in the city, and runs its own graduate programme through the Cologne Graduate School of Ageing Research.
