Founded in 1919 as the Rijksstudiedienst voor de Luchtvaart, it has been an applied research institution for more than a hundred years and received the royal designation on its centenary. NLR is an independent, non-profit organisation and one of the five TO2 institutes for applied research; it works for and with national and international industry, the Dutch government and the Ministry of Defence. NLR's mission is to make air and space travel more sustainable, safer, more efficient and more effective through innovation. It operates state-of-the-art research infrastructure, including wind tunnels, flight and air traffic control simulators, laboratories and field labs, from its sites in Amsterdam and Marknesse in the Noordoostpolder. Its work bridges the gap between fundamental research and practical applications in aircraft design, propulsion and electrification, space technology, air traffic management, safety and defence. NLR recruits R&D scientists and engineers at master's and PhD level, as well as software and systems specialists, and offers internships and graduation assignments.
