It takes its name from the Bicocca district in the north of the city, a former Pirelli industrial quarter redeveloped around the new campus, and a second campus in Monza houses the medical school alongside the San Gerardo hospital. The university is organised into fourteen departments covering economics and statistics, law, sociology, education, psychology, medicine and surgery, and the physical, biological, earth and computer sciences. It teaches roughly 38,000 students and is one of the youngest Italian universities to appear consistently in the international rankings. Research strengths include materials science and nanotechnology, environmental and earth sciences, neuroscience and oncology, and quantitative social science; several departments have held the Italian ministry's "Department of Excellence" designation.
