A position for a Developer in the area of Social Digital Twins for the Digital Society Research Center of FBK. This position is founded by Programma Nazionale Ricerca Innovazione e Competitività 2021-2027.

FBK is a research institution devoted to excellence in research in numerous disciplines and designated to the role of keeping the Autonomous Province of Trento in the mainstream of European and international research. In particular, Digital Society (DigiS) is a research center of Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) formed by a multidisciplinary team of more than 100 researchers, technologists, and managers (including Ph.D. and students). It is organized in 9 research units dedicated to specific research areas in the AI and ICT domain and two support units focusing on project management and technology maturation. The candidate will be working in the Modeling and Simulation of Socio-Technical Systems (MoST) research unit of the Digital Society center. The unit aims to research new modeling and simulation techniques for complex socio-technical systems (e.g., cities, rural areas, complex organizations) by exploiting, developing and integrating data science, artificial intelligence and complex systems approaches. One of the key research areas of the MoST unit are Social Digital Twins, namely dynamic digital models of socio-technical systems, fed by data collected from the systems themselves, and capable of faithfully reproducing their behavior and of predicting their evolution, including the effects and impacts of external changes (eg, climate change) and internal processes (e.g., urban/rural transition policies and incentives).

Background information and description of research projects

This position is offered within the ECHO-TWIN-NET project (Networking for Excellence and Technology Transfer). The ECHO-TWIN-NET is a strategic initiative designed to consolidate and expand the Innovation Hub connected to the ICSC National Centre (High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing). The project aims to strengthen existing computing infrastructure and research laboratories, boosting technology transfer activities from academia to the industrial sector. Through the development of smart ecosystems, the initiative promotes the convergence of advanced technologies such as Digital Twins, distributed Artificial Intelligence, and Edge-Cloud-HPC convergence, supporting post-PNRR technological competitiveness.

Job Description

FBK is seeking a developer to support the activities of the MoST unit in the area of Social Digital Twins. The candidate will be involved in software development and data analysis activities related to the modeling of the social dynamics related to civic engagement, citizen attitude towards urban/rural changes, active civic participation in transformation processes.

The specific focus for the sought developer is on digital twins for urban mobility, in particular on the design and development of tools for modeling and simulating the impacts of social dynamics and individual behaviors on urban mobility under structural and regulatory policy changes.

These activities will be carried out in the scope of the research and innovation projects managed by the MoST unit, in particular of the ECHO-TWIN-NET project.

The candidates will work in collaboration with other researchers of the FBK, as well as with partners involved in the projects.

Depending on organizational needs, the selected candidate may also be involved in additional activities or projects within the Centre.

Job requirements

The ideal candidate must have the following requirements: Master in Computer Science, Information Engineering, or related fields; Experience in at least one the areas of AI, data analysis, modeling and/or simulation; Software development skills (preferably in Python); Language assessment according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): level of knowledge required. Knowledge of English and Italian will be verified during the interview on a technical or scientific topic and must be equal to or exceed level B2. Furthermore, the following elements will be positively evaluated: Experience in working for research projects and/or in research groups; Experience in analysis of urban mobility and/or transportation.

Selection process and assessment criteria

The Evaluating Committee will be appointed by the People Innovation for Research Director at the end of the application deadline.

The recruiting process will be handled in accordance with the Foundation's Gender Equality Plan.

The Committee may compile the short-list of the candidates admitted to the interview, remotely or in presence. The short-list shall be compiled based on the requirements set out in the call (contained in the requirements of the job description), with the support of the screening of CVs and any other required documents.

Candidates with a minimum score will be admitted to the interview phase. Shortlisted candidates must do at least one interview with the Committee.

In case of specific need, the Selection Committee can also meet remotely, by teleconference or videoconference, provided that all members can be identified and that they are able to follow and intervene in the discussion, as well as to receive, transmit and view documents.

During the evaluation step, evaluation support tools such as tests or questionnaires may be used. Furthermore, group tests and/or practical tests may be administered.

Evaluation criteria

The selection process includes two evaluation moments led by the Commission: the screening and the interview phase.

The screening process will be based on the evaluation of the qualifications and expertise that the candidate expresses on the resume. A maximum of 40 points will be allocated to this assessment phase and only candidates obtaining at least 25 points will be admitted to the interview. The interview scores will be assigned to candidates by the Commission according to the following criteria: the presentation of their professional and technical profile; the knowledge about the scientific and technical domain, the experience in the domain and the language skills.
