Descripción del proyecto

The Quantum Device Lab is looking for highly motivated Doctoral Students for the development of a superconducting qubit quantum network and research in quantum networking applications.

A team of researchers led by Andreas Wallraff from the Quantum Device Lab, at the Department of Physics of ETH Zurich has developed a unique superconducting qubit system consisting of two dilution refrigerators equipped with superconducting qubit chips, separated by 30 meters, and connected through a cryogenic link. By exchanging microwave photons across the link, this system can generate remote entanglement between the separated chips as a resource for quantum information experiments and applications. The platform has already enabled demonstrations including loophole-free Bell tests and randomness amplification.

We are now expanding the platform through advances in chip fabrication, packaging, networking protocols, and distributed control systems. These developments will enable research into further potential application areas of quantum networks, including loss-tolerant photonic state transfer, distributed quantum computing and quantum error correction, blind quantum computing, and non-local sensing. To ensure this project's success and fast progress, we are looking for highly motivated Doctoral Students in quantum networking with superconducting circuits.

Job description

  • You will become part of our team developing and running a two-node quantum network
  • You will be working closely with the rest of the Quantum Device Lab, a well-established research group with a strong background in quantum computing with superconducting qubits, and be able to both benefit from the expertise developed there and contribute to its progress
  • You will perform collaborative research towards the realization of quantum networking technologies
  • You will get to contribute to diverse aspects of the experimental effort, both technical (design of electronics and mechanical components, building of microwave setups, fabrication of superconducting circuit chips) and conceptual (design of experiments, exploring quantum networking applications, planning of future research strategies)
  • In the lab, you will pursue the development of the platform by enabling and implementing quantum networking protocols on a network of multi-qubit superconducting circuit chips

Profile

  • You have a strong interest in experimental realizations of quantum information processing systems, with a focus on remote and non-local applications
  • You are dedicated to pursuing a successful career in research, development, or education, either in academia or industry

You have experience and a proven record in one or more of the following:

  • Quantum information processing and its implementations (e.g. with superconducting circuits, quantum dots, ion traps, NMR)
  • Experimental quantum optics and atomic physics (cavity quantum electrodynamics)
  • Micro and nano-electronic devices and their fabrication (lithography and deposition techniques)
  • Quantum networking and remote entanglement generation
  • Mesoscopic solid state physics
  • Low temperature physics
  • Microwave electronics
  • Digital electronics
  • FPGAs
  • Instrumentation, drivers, and software development

We offer

Your project is embedded into the Swiss Quantum Science and Technology network, the Quantum Center at ETH Zurich, and into the broader context of a diverse set of international research projects.
