Resumen de Explicify

Resumen de la oferta

NIOO-KNAW Netherlands Institute of Ecology in Wageningen offers an MSc internship focused on reconstructing the trophic history of Lake IJsselmeer. The project aims to assess water quality restoration by analyzing sediment cores using pigments, diatoms, and geochemistry. Interns will produce diatom and pollen records for dating and evaluate historical trophic states through species distribution. This 5-8 month position, starting November/December 2026, involves fieldwork, core-opening, chemical extractions, and microscopy. It is designed for MSc students with a bachelor’s degree in biology, geology, physical geography, or environmental sciences who are interested in freshwater ecology. Participants gain expertise in paleo-sciences and fossilized taxonomy, preparing them for PhD studies or roles in water management and consultancy. Deliverables include a university-guided written report and optional outreach materials like infographics or articles.

Descripción del proyecto

Why

Lake IJsselmeer is the largest freshwater body in the Netherlands and an important source of drinking water. Like other freshwater ecosystems, it experienced a peak in eutrophication during the 80s, after which nutrient loads began to decline (Frenken et al., 2023). Very little is known about the trophic history of Dutch freshwater ecosystems prior to the invention of synthetic fertilizer. To assess the success of water quality measures, restoration efforts, and set realistic targets, we need to reconstruct historical conditions using sediment cores.

What

Here, we propose to establish a detailed assessment of the trophic state of IJsselmeer using pigments, diatoms, and geochemistry of its sediments.

The candidate will focus on producing diatom and pollen records for dating (by matching them with other cores). She/he will also provide information on the trophic state through its species distribution. The intern also has access to core-scanning data from XRF and hyperspectral scanning.

When

5-8 months of work starting in November/December 2026; for these, count on a 30-60 ECTS thesis.

Who

MSc students with a bachelor’s in biology, geology, physical geography, or environmental sciences and a keen interest in freshwater quality in the Netherlands. All additional ideas are welcome. Students/Interns are encouraged to become involved in outreach activities.
