Descripción del proyecto

Change starts with us, but also with you.

Developing innovative technology solutions and bringing them to application - that is our goal at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS.

We possess a broad and strategically relevant base of expertise for the development of silicon nitride (SiN)-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs) on 200-mm and 300-mm platforms. Our expertise covers the entire technological value chain—from device design and process technology to characterization—and encompasses key technologies such as the co-integration of MEMS and photonics, as well as innovative integration approaches like quasi-monolithic integration (QMI).

We are seeking a Research Associate for our Erfurt location to start as soon as possible, in order to specifically address the growing market potential of integrated photonics—particularly in the fields of optical sensing, biosensing, and module integration—and to further develop application-oriented module solutions.

Be part of change

  • Technology Development and System Design: Conducting process development and optimization, as well as their integration, for the manufacture of PICs across various production sites
  • Project Acquisition and Technology Transfer: Supporting the acquisition of industrial projects as well as publicly funded research and development projects
  • Scientific Networking and Representation: Participation in international conferences and workshops for professional development, scientific exchange, and networking
  • Cooperation:
  • Proactive communication and serving as a liaison with cooperating Fraunhofer Institutes to ensure smooth knowledge transfer
  • Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams at various locations consisting of engineers and scientists

What you contribute

  • Academic Qualifications: Completed graduate degree (Master’s/Diploma) in photonics, electrical engineering, physics, or a comparable field
  • Technical Expertise and Professional Experience: Several years of relevant professional experience (at least 3 years) in the field of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC), as well as expertise in research and development projects; demonstrable experience in translating scientific findings into industrial applications, as well as patents and publications, is a plus
  • Key technological expertise: In-depth knowledge in at least two of the following areas:
  • Design and simulation of PICs
  • Photonic components and integrated optics
  • PIC technology platforms (e.g., InP, SiPh, SiN)
  • Scientific approach: Strong analytical skills and a structured, independent approach to tackling complex technical problems
  • Personality: Commitment to structured and self-directed work, as well as a strong team spirit
  • Languages: Good command of German (at least B1 level) and English (at least C1 level) for collaboration on national and international research and development projects
