Descripción del proyecto

Swiss TPH advances global health through research, education and impact. For over 80 years, we have generated scientific evidence, strengthened capacity, and created solutions that reach millions. From malaria and tuberculosis to cancer and climate-driven health risks, we tackle the most pressing challenges of our time. Associated with the University of Basel, 950 people from 90 nations work in partnership across 120 countries, taking science to impact in Switzerland and worldwide.

Our research spans basic science, epidemiology and implementation science. It addresses infectious and non-communicable diseases from biological mechanisms and disease patterns in populations to health systems and policy. Our researchers combine experimental, clinical and population-based approaches, evaluating interventions under real-world conditions. The Disease Modelling Group is currently looking for a Senior scientist or postdoctoral scientist in modelling novel malaria vector control interventions.

Applying statistical and mathematical modelling and simulation to improve understanding of impact of novel vector control interventions, with a focus on spatial emanators, on mosquito population dynamics and malaria transmission and disease burden.

Your various responsibilities include:

  • Developing, calibrating and analysing mosquito and malaria models
  • Analysing entomological and epidemiological field data (including data from implementation studies and randomized control trials)
  • Calibrating models to entomological and epidemiological data
  • Running, aggregating and analysing results of large simulation experiments using population-based and individual-based models
  • Interacting with epidemiological and entomological research partners
  • Travel to partner field sites and conferences

You should have the following experience and skills:

  • PhD in statistics, mathematics or a related discipline. e.g.: quantitative epidemiology, ecology, modelling, computational biology
  • Strong statistical modelling skills, preferably also mathematical modelling skills
  • Strong programming skills (in at least one of Python, R, Matlab, C/C++), preferably with experience in working with a version control system (preferably Git) and in using high performance computing clusters
  • Expertise/background and interest in areas of infectious disease modelling and vector ecology
  • Ability to deliver high-quality research and to publish in peer reviewed journals
  • Ability to initiate, plan, implement and deliver programs of work to tight deadlines, both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team on large research projects in a culturally diverse environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English, with good presentation skills

What we offer:

  • Meaningful work in an international environment
  • A state-of-the-art workplace, right next to the Main Campus of Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area in Allschwil

  • Attractive employment conditions, training and development opportunities and mentoring

Job conditions:

  • Start Date: 1 February 2027
  • Duration: 2 years with option of renewal
  • Percentage: 80-100%
  • Location: Allschwil
  • Travel required: yes, around 3 - 5 weeks per year (1 consortium meeting, 1-2 field visits, 1-2 scientific conferences)

How to apply:

Please submit your application online.

  • CV
  • Motivational letter including names and contact information (email or phone) of 2-3 references
  • Diploma
