It works alongside the University of Pavia and the city's historic colleges. IUSS admits undergraduate and doctoral students to residential programmes taught in addition to a University of Pavia degree. Its classes cover science and technology, biomedical sciences, humanities and life sciences, and the social sciences. Its research is particularly established in earthquake engineering and seismic risk — through the Understanding and Managing Extremes programme and long collaboration with the EUCENTRE foundation — as well as in cognitive neuroscience, applied mathematics and the study of ancient texts.
