It is one of the institutes of NWO-I, the institutes organisation of the Dutch Research Council, and since 2021 its main site has been in Leiden, next to the science campus of Leiden University, with a second location in Groningen. As the national expertise institute it advises the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON describes itself as an international research institute operating at the forefront of space research to answer fundamental questions about the cosmos and the climate on Earth. Its programmes cover astrophysics, exoplanet research and Earth observation, with a particular focus on the composition of the atmosphere and the role of aerosols and greenhouse gases in climate. SRON develops new detection techniques for X-rays, infrared radiation and visible light, and builds scientific instruments for missions of ESA, NASA and JAXA, from the Athena X-ray observatory to the TROPOMI and future greenhouse-gas satellites. SRON recruits PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, instrument scientists, engineers and technicians, and offers internships and graduation projects.
