It is unusual in being genuinely… The University of Insubria (Università degli Studi dell'Insubria) was founded in 1998 from faculties previously belonging to the universities of Milan and Pavia, and takes its name from the historic region of Insubria straddling western Lombardy. It is unusual in being genuinely bicephalous: its departments are divided between Varese and Como, with further teaching at Busto Arsizio. The university has around 12,000 students and seven departments, covering medicine and surgery, biotechnology and life sciences, theoretical and applied sciences, science and high technology, economics, law and the humanities. Its research includes work in immunology and clinical medicine, ecology and environmental science around the Insubrian lakes, theoretical physics and mathematics, computer science, and international and European law, and it works with the ASST Sette Laghi hospital system in Varese.
