The modern university was re-established in 1968 and since the 1980s has occupied a large purpose-built campus at Fisciano, with a second campus at Baronissi housing the medical school. With around 35,000 students and sixteen departments, Salerno is the principal university of the Campania hinterland. It teaches engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, pharmacy, medicine, economics, law, political and communication sciences, and the humanities. Its research is well established in computer science and software engineering, pharmaceutical and food chemistry, civil and environmental engineering, and cultural heritage, and the Fisciano campus is one of the largest and most self-contained university campuses in Italy.
