It is the only Italian university established by direct public initiative in this way. Udine has around 15,000 students and eight departments, covering agricultural, food, environmental and animal sciences, medicine, mathematics, computer science and physics, engineering and architecture, economics and statistics, law, languages and literature, and humanities and cultural heritage. Its research is particularly strong in oenology and food science, plant pathology and agricultural biotechnology, artificial intelligence and formal methods in computer science, and in the study of the Friulian language and the region's multilingual heritage.
