Unlike the Milan and Turin polytechnics it also teaches medicine and economics, giving it an unusual combination of engineering, life sciences and management within a single technical institution. The university has around 17,000 students across five faculties — engineering, medicine and surgery, agriculture, economics, and science — and twelve departments. Its research strengths lie in marine and fisheries biology, food and agricultural science, biomedical engineering and clinical medicine, materials and industrial engineering, and energy. Its position on the Adriatic coast underpins substantial work in marine ecology and aquaculture, and the medical school is integrated with the Ospedali Riuniti di Ancona regional teaching hospital.
