25 PhD Positions (m/f/d) - Max Planck School of Biomedical AI.

The Max Planck School of Biomedical Artificial Intelligence has opened the call for its first cohort of fully funded PhD positions at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the life sciences.

Our network

The Max Planck School of Biomedical AI (BMAI) brings together leading researchers from universities and research institutions across Germany to advance AI-based approaches in the life sciences. With more than 30 participating research groups, BMAI offers doctoral researchers access to a broad and diverse research network spanning AI, computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, and the life sciences.

What we offer

  • A structured three-year PhD program at the interface of AI and biomedical research
  • Individual supervision by two BMAI Fellows from complementary research backgrounds
  • Access to a network of leading universities and research institutions across Germany
  • Recurring one-week Schools combining interdisciplinary scientific training, research exchange, and career development
  • Access to state-of-the-art research environments across participating institutions
  • Funding for annual participation in an international scientific conference
  • Structured mentoring and opportunities for professional development
  • Competitive employment contracts at participating universities and research institutions

Research and training

BMAI doctoral researchers develop and apply computational and AI methods to address challenging questions across the life sciences. Research spans four interconnected areas, from molecular and cellular systems and protein and molecule design to complex biological traits and neural networks.

As the School connects researchers across Germany, doctoral researchers come together at the annual Schools for interdisciplinary training and scientific exchange, while pursuing their research in one of the participating research groups.

Who are we looking for?

We welcome applications from highly motivated and excellent candidates who will hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics, or a related field. Candidates from the life sciences are also encouraged to apply if they have a strong computational background and significant programming experience.

Your application

  • Applications open: 1 September 2026
  • Application deadline: 1 December 2026
  • Start of the program: September 2027
