Professorship in “Reservoir Engineering, Production and Underground Storage” (Open Rank Professorship (W3 or W1 with Tenure Track towards W3) Effective April 1, 2028. We are seeking a nationally and internationally recognized, scientifically outstanding, and accomplished individual to represent the field of geofluid engineering / reservoir engineering with a clear focus on securing future energy and raw material supplies—in both teaching and research—addressing the topics of geothermal energy, storage technologies, and the extraction of energy resources and raw materials. In line with the strategic profile of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, the professorship will focus not only on fundamental research but also on practice-oriented aspects of using the geological subsurface for material storage and geothermal energy production, as well as for the production from conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs, and the extraction of other raw materials. Issues relating to the integrity of wells and reservoirs, as well as the safe abandonment and long-term safeguarding of depleted or disused wells, will constitute another important research focus. The Institute of Drilling Engineering and Fluid Mining offers extensive laboratory facilities and a broad range of experimental setups for application-oriented teaching and research. The successful candidate is expected to integrate the existing analytical infrastructure into the conceptual and academic development of the chair, make effective use of it, and further develop it for R&D projects with other research groups at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, as well as with institutions in Germany and abroad. In the future, the professorship’s research profile should continue to be based on both laboratory investigations and numerical simulation in order to meet the increasingly complex demands of the field. The TU Bergakademie Freiberg adheres to a teaching and research philosophy that values a high level of involvement in teaching, the research group activities, and university selfgovernance. The position will be filled based on the applicant’s (m/f/d) qualifications, primarily at the W3 salary grade for permanent appointment, or in salary grade W1 for Junior Professorship with a Tenure-Track to W3 (m/f/d) in the very early stages of their career following their doctorate. In the event of appointment as a junior professor (m/f/d) at salary grade W1 with a tenure track to W3, the requirements according to § 64 of the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) must be fulfilled, in particular an outstanding doctoral dissertation in the related field of appointment as well as pedagogical aptitude. Furthermore, a recognizable research profile, relevant theoretical and methodological knowledge, teaching experience in the subject area of the junior professorship, and successful research activities (particularly internationally recognized, English-language publications and presentations; initial experience in securing external funding) are expected. Appointment will initially be as a temporary civil servant for three years and will be extended for an additional three years following a positive interim evaluation. The evaluation process is based on criteria mutually agreed upon at the start of employment in the areas of research, teaching performance, academic self-governance/volunteer engagement, and knowledge transfer. Following a successful tenure-track evaluation—no later than the sixth year—and provided the civil service requirements are met, the candidate will be appointed to a tenured civil service position in salary grade W3 without the need for a new job advertisement. Additionally, §§ 60 paragraph 2 and 71 paragraph 3 of the SächsHSG apply. The university supports tenure-track professors through counseling, networking, continuing education, and mentoring. The Graduate and Research Academy at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, in collaboration with the Saxony Center for University Didactics, offers tailored continuing education courses in university teaching methods. To fill the tenured W3 professorship, the candidate must meet the general appointment requirements for professors (m/f/d) as specified in Section 59 of the Saxon Higher Education Act. Requirements include a completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude and knowledge of university teaching methods, a doctoral degree in the field of appointment, as well as a habilitation or a positively evaluated junior professorship or achievements equivalent to a habilitation. The Faculty of Geosciences, Geoengineering and Mining is interested in applicants (m/f/d) who can demonstrate high-quality publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as independent teaching experience and experience in securing external funding. Furthermore, several years of professional experience in the relevant field and demonstrable experience in a leadership role are expected.
