Founded in 1899, it has been an independent public body since 2004, a legal status that safeguards the reliability of the information it collects and publishes. CBS is based in The Hague and Heerlen, and its mission is to publish reliable and consistent statistical information that responds to society's demands, in support of public debate, policy development and decision-making. CBS produces the official statistics of the Netherlands on the economy, the population, the labour market, health, education, the environment and many other fields, and it is the national partner of Eurostat. It runs a substantial methodological and data-science research programme, works with universities through joint chairs and PhD projects, and operates the microdata facilities that Dutch researchers use for analyses on register data. CBS recruits statistical researchers, methodologists, data scientists, economists and software engineers, and offers traineeships, internships and graduation projects.
