It was founded in 1926 as the Higher Institute of Architecture of Venice, and its teaching has been shaped by figures including Giuseppe Samonà, Carlo Scarpa, Manfredo Tafuri and Aldo Rossi. The university teaches architecture, urban and regional planning, design, visual arts, fashion and theatre to around 4,000 students, from historic buildings in Venice including the Tolentini, the Cotonificio at Santa Marta and Ca' Tron. Its research covers architectural design and history, conservation and restoration, urban and territorial planning, landscape, climate adaptation and the specific problems of the Venetian lagoon, and product, visual and interaction design.
