It was founded in 1876 as the Zoological Station, took… NIOZ, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee), is the national oceanographic institute and centre of expertise of the Netherlands for the ocean, sea and coast. It was founded in 1876 as the Zoological Station, took its current name in 1960, and celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2026. NIOZ is part of the institutes organisation of NWO, the Dutch Research Council, and has two locations: on the island of Texel and in Yerseke in Zeeland. NIOZ promotes fundamental understanding of marine systems, how they change, the role they play in climate and biodiversity, and how they can contribute to sustainable use of the sea. Its four scientific departments study coastal systems, ocean systems, marine microbiology and biogeochemistry, and estuarine and delta systems, from the Wadden Sea to the deep ocean and the polar regions. The institute operates research vessels and offers research facilities to marine scientists from the Netherlands and other countries, and it plays a role in educating students through internships, graduation projects and summer schools. NIOZ recruits PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, tenure-track and senior scientists, research assistants and technicians, and ship's crew.
