It serves the Capitanata, one of the most important agricultural areas in Italy, and its academic profile follows that economy closely. The university has around 12,000 students and six departments: agricultural sciences, food, natural resources and engineering; medical and surgical sciences; clinical and experimental medicine; economics, management and territory; law; and humanities, literature, cultural heritage and education. Its research is strongest in food science and technology, agronomy and plant production, food safety and microbiology, and in clinical medicine carried out with the Policlinico Riuniti di Foggia teaching hospital.
