It is unusual among Italian state universities in being devoted entirely to the humanities and social sciences, having no scientific or medical faculties, and its buildings occupy the historic hill town of Macerata in the Marche. The university teaches around 10,000 students in five departments: law; economics and law; political science, communication and international relations; education, cultural heritage and tourism; and humanities — languages, mediation, history, letters and philosophy. Its research covers civil, Roman and comparative law, economics and development, political theory and international relations, pedagogy and educational sciences, tourism and cultural heritage management, philology and the history of philosophy.
