Angebotszusammenfassung

The University Medical Center Freiburg invites a Postdoctoral Researcher in Influenza Virology and Innate Immunity to join the ERC Starting Grant project FLU‑ARMOR. The role focuses on how zoonotic influenza A viruses evade human innate immunity, combining experimental virology with AI‑driven surveillance to identify risk signatures for pandemic preparedness. Applicants should hold a PhD in virology or related fields, have experience in molecular virology and virus‑host interactions, and be fluent in English (C1). The position is full‑time (38.5 h/week) for five years, based in Freiburg’s BSL‑3 facilities, with competitive remuneration (TV‑L E13) and opportunities for independent research, mentoring, and collaboration across virology, immunology, and computational biology.

Projektbeschreibung

The research group of Dr Kevin Ciminski at the Institute of Virology, University Medical Center Freiburg, is recruiting for the ERC Starting Grant project FLU-ARMOR Postdoctoral Researcher in Influenza Virology and Innate Immunity (m/f/d) Background: The research group of Dr Kevin Ciminski investigates molecular virus–host interactions that determine the zoonotic and pandemic potential of influenza A viruses. Within the ERC Starting Grant project FLU-ARMOR, we will examine how zoonotic influenza viruses overcome MxA-mediated human innate immune restriction and acquire traits associated with human adaptation. By combining experimental analyses of viral immune-evasion mechanisms with AI-assisted surveillance approaches, the project aims to identify molecular risk signatures and establish a mechanistically informed framework for the early assessment of emerging influenza viruses and contribute to pandemic preparedness. We offer: a central scientific role in the newly established ERC Starting Grant project FLU-ARMOR the opportunity to develop an independent research profile and supervise junior researchers access to state-of-the-art BSL-3 laboratories, imaging, sequencing and animal facilities close interaction with national and international collaborators in virology, immunology and computational biology structured mentoring and support for publications, conference participation, and future fellowship applications a full-time position (38.5h/week) for five years, with remuneration according to TV-L E13 an attractive research and living environment in Freiburg, a vibrant university city located at the edge of the Black Forest Your profile - required qualifications: PhD in virology, infection biology, or related fields proven experience in molecular virology, virus-host interactions or innate immunity independent, highly motivated researcher eager to adapt to novel technologies and methodologies demonstrated collaborative skills and commitment to scientific excellence excellent written and spoken English (CEFR level C1 or equivalent) strong publication record appropriate to the applicant's career stage Your profile - desirable qualifications: experience with influenza viruses or other respiratory viruses experience with reverse genetics and cell-based infection models experience working under BSL-3 conditions experience working with mouse models (EU function A,D - formerly FELASA B) Apply via our online portal and include the following documents in a single PDF: cover letter outlining your motivation, relevant experience, and research interests curriculum vitae a complete list of publications the names and contact information of two references who are willing to provide a letter upon request Application deadline: October 25, 2026. Starting date: January, 2027. Inquiries can be addressed to: Dr. Kevin Ciminski Institute of Virology Freiburg kevin.ciminski@uniklinik-freiburg.de General information: Salary is assigned according to a pay scale. Unless prevented by operational or legal reasons, full-time positions are generally open to those wishing to job share.
