The National Institute for Nuclear Physics (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, INFN) is the Italian public research body for subnuclear, nuclear and astroparticle physics, founded in 1951 by the groups that had continued the work of Enrico Fermi's school in Rome, Padua,… The National Institute for Nuclear Physics (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, INFN) is the Italian public research body for subnuclear, nuclear and astroparticle physics, founded in 1951 by the groups that had continued the work of Enrico Fermi's school in Rome, Padua, Turin and Milan. It reports to the Ministry of University and Research and has its presidency in Frascati. INFN works through about twenty divisions hosted in university physics departments, four national laboratories — Frascati, Legnaro, Gran Sasso and the Southern National Laboratories at Catania — and several national centres. It is a principal partner in the CERN experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, runs the underground laboratories at Gran Sasso where neutrino and dark matter experiments are carried out, participates in the Virgo gravitational-wave detector at Cascina, and supports theoretical physics, detector development, accelerator science and scientific computing.
