It admits a small number of students each year by a… The Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa was founded in 1810 by Napoleonic decree as a branch of the École normale supérieure of Paris, and re-established as an Italian institution after unification. It admits a small number of students each year by a demanding national examination, provides them with free tuition and board, and educates them alongside a degree taken at the University of Pisa. The Normale has two classes, sciences and letters and philosophy, with a further structure in Florence for the political and social sciences. Its alumni include the Nobel laureates Enrico Fermi and Carlo Rubbia and the mathematicians Enrico Bombieri and Alessio Figalli, both Fields medallists. Research is concentrated in mathematics, theoretical and condensed matter physics, chemistry, computational and molecular science, classics, philology, philosophy, art history and modern history, and the school maintains research libraries and laboratories of national importance.
