Project overview
Project title
Thermochemical Activation of Mining and Organic Waste for Low-Carbon Cementitious Materials
Project description
This project aims to develop advanced circular concrete systems by converting mining and organic waste streams into high-performance, low-carbon construction materials. The research will focus on thermochemical activation of underutilised mining residues to improve their suitability as supplementary cementitious materials, alongside the integration of organic waste-derived components to enhance concrete performance and durability.
The project addresses key national challenges: the environmental risks posed by mining waste stockpiles, the growing pressures on organic waste management, and the urgent need to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete production. By applying innovative thermochemical activation processes, the research will unlock the reactivity of mining residues and convert organic waste into value-added materials capable of partially replacing conventional cement. These innovations will also enable the safe immobilisation of hazardous contaminants within the concrete matrix, delivering environmental protection alongside reduced emissions and improved material performance.
Based at the university and delivered in collaboration with the industry partner and CSIRO, the project offers an opportunity for the student to work at the intersection of sustainable materials, manufacturing, circular economy, and mineral resources. The successful candidate will gain experience in advanced material characterisation, concrete technology, and industry-focused research with strong real-world application and impact.
