It offers full-time bachelor's programmes, part-time and dual programmes for working professionals, associate degrees, professional master's programmes and courses, under the motto that at the HU "everything comes together": students, professionals, researchers and the region's organisations. The HU's institutes cover business and economics, ICT, engineering and design, the built environment, health care, social work, education and teacher training, communication and journalism, and law. Its practice-oriented research is organised in knowledge centres on themes such as healthy and sustainable living, learning and innovation, digital business and society, and social innovation, led by professors of applied sciences (lectoren) who work with the professional field on applied questions. The HU recruits lecturers, lecturer-researchers, researchers and professors of applied sciences, together with educational and support staff, and it invites professionals from the field to combine teaching with their own practice.
