It is named after Guido Carli, the economist and governor of the Bank of Italy who led the university in the 1970s and 1980s. Luiss concentrates on the social sciences, teaching around 10,000 students across four departments: economics and finance, business and management, law, and political science. Its faculty publish in economics, finance, corporate and European law, political science and international relations, and the university runs a business school and a school of government alongside its degree programmes. It recruits internationally, teaches extensively in English, and maintains close links with Italian business and public institutions.
