Its alumni include Giulio Natta, awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963 for his work on polymers, and the architects Gio Ponti, Aldo Rossi and Renzo Piano. The university teaches engineering, architecture and design to around 47,000 students across campuses in Milan — Città Studi, Bovisa and Leonardo — and satellite sites at Como, Lecco, Cremona, Mantua and Piacenza. It is consistently the highest-placed Italian institution in international subject rankings for engineering, architecture and design, and its twelve departments carry out research in aerospace, energy and nuclear engineering, mechanics and materials, electronics and information technology, mathematics, chemistry, civil and environmental engineering, urban planning and industrial design.
