Founded in 1909, it is an independent agency of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, based in Bilthoven near Utrecht, and it also works for other ministries, provinces and municipalities. Its motto is "committed to health and sustainability". RIVM collects, analyses and interprets data on infectious diseases through field and laboratory research, organises the National Immunisation Programme and supports the municipal public health services. It monitors the quality of air, water and soil, carries out measurements after incidents involving hazardous substances, and researches radiation, chemicals, medicines and lifestyle. Its findings feed directly into government policy and public information, and it runs national programmes such as the population screening programmes and the health surveys. RIVM employs scientists in epidemiology, microbiology, toxicology, environmental science, data science and many other disciplines, and offers PhD positions in cooperation with universities, traineeships and internships.
