Project Description
Blekinge Institute of Technology is a place of curiosity and ingenuity with a campus in the middle of the Blekinge archipelago. Here we offer education from undergraduate to doctoral level and conduct world-class applied research. We change and make a difference. Do you want to become one of us?
The Department of Software Engineering has about 50 employees from 20 countries. Our tradition in software engineering originated from 1990 when we launched Sweden's first education programme in software engineering. The department's research and education environment, SERL Sweden ‒ Software Engineering Research and Education Lab Sweden, has since then developed into one of the world's leading research institutions in software engineering. The department is responsible for study programmes in software engineering from undergraduate to postgraduate levels.
Work description
The position includes research, course development, teaching, and supervision in Software Engineering, with a special focus on Verification and Validation (V&V) of AI-Intensive Systems. The employment is divided into 60% research and 40% teaching over six years. Within the first year, the candidate is expected to participate in the recruitment of a PhD student in the core area and assume lead supervision, supported by a team of experienced supervisors. The candidate is expected to qualify for promotion to Senior Lecturer within a maximum of five and a half years, leading to a permanent position.
The successful candidate will lead the development of a new research area and group within SERL (Software engineering Education and Research Lab), addressing one of the most urgent challenges in modern software engineering - ensuring the trustworthiness, reliability, safety, and compliance of systems that incorporate Generative AI (GenAI) and other learning components. AI-intensive systems introduce non-deterministic, adaptive, and evolving behavior, challenging established engineering and assurance practices. The position focuses on advancing new V&V methods, tools, and principles that assure quality and compliance in such systems without constraining their generative potential. Application areas include, but are not limited to, autonomous vehicles, defense systems, telecommunications, and other software-intensive product and services.
The candidate is expected to develop their own research focus, lead industry-relevant projects in co-production, and contribute to SERL’s continued growth as a world-class research and educational environment. Industrial collaboration and external research funding are central to this role. The candidate will work closely with SAAB, Ericsson, and FMV to address real-world V&V challenges in AI-intensive systems, with additional industrial partnerships expected as the research group expands. The candidate should be prepared to undergo a security clearance evaluation as a part of the employment procedure.
Teaching responsibilities include lecturing, project supervision, and course development at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. The teaching at the undergraduate level is mainly in Swedish, while the teaching at the graduate and postgraduate levels is mainly in English. We expect a non-Swedish-speaking employee to acquire sufficient knowledge of Swedish within three years to be able to teach in Swedish and communicate with the university's units/ functions in Swedish.
Eligibility requirements
Eligible to be employed as an associate senior lecturer is a person who has been awarded a doctoral degree or has attained equivalent scientific competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a doctoral degree or attained equivalent competence no more than seven years prior to the application deadline for employment as an associate senior lecturer. Persons who have been awarded a doctoral degree or attained equivalent competence earlier can be considered for employment if special reasons exist. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. (HF Chapter 4, § 4a).
Eligibility requirements and assessment criteria are described in detail in the Guidelines for employment and promotion of teachers, which is available at the page Vacancies at BTH (Guidelines for employment of teachers EN 240101.pdf).
Meriting competencies and experience
In addition to the requirements described in the work description, eligibility requirements, and assessment criteria for the position, the following competencies, and experiences are considered meritorious:
- Documented research experience in software engineering with a focus on one or several of the following areas:
- Verification and Validation of AI-Intensive Systems - including probabilistic and statistical testing, formal verification, and runtime monitoring for systems exhibiting non-deterministic or adaptive behaviour
- Testing and Assurance of Machine Learning and Generative AI Components - robustness and reliability testing, explainability and transparency evaluation, and techniques for detecting data or model drift.
- Safety, Reliability, and Compliance Engineering - experience with quality assurance frameworks and standards for software-intensive or safety-critical systems (e.g., ISO 26262, ISO 34504, IEC 61508).
- Simulation- and Scenario-Based Validation e.g. use of digital twins, synthetic data, and virtual environments to assess AI system performance and safety under uncertainty.
- Professional experience in software or AI development in industry
- Ability to establish and lead research projects and initiatives and demonstrated ability to attract external funding
- Publications in high-quality international conferences or journals in software engineering, AI engineering, or related fields
- Pedagogical experience in terms of teaching, developing courses, supervision on base and advanced level.
Scientific excellence in software engineering is given primary consideration, followed by pedagogical skill. The evaluation will also consider the ability to collaborate effectively within teams and with industrial partners, and leadership potential in building a new research area and group.
Great importance is placed on good social skills and a strong work ethic.
