Offer Summary

Lund University in Sweden is recruiting a full-time doctoral student for modern algebraic topology, with a primary focus on homotopy theory. This position, partly funded by the Swedish Research Council under the project 'Local to global extensions of topological quantum field theories,' allows candidates to explore related fields such as stable homotopy theory and higher category theory. The role combines doctoral studies with potential teaching duties, capped at 20% of the workload. Applicants must hold a second-cycle degree with significant advanced mathematics coursework and demonstrate proficiency in English. Merits include experience in infinity-categories. The employment is fixed-term, starting no later than October 1, 2027, offering benefits typical of a Swedish government agency, including generous holidays and pension plans.

Project Description

Description of the workplace

The position will be based in the Division of Mathematics at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is a joint department of the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) and the Faculty of Science (N) at Lund University, bringing together all mathematical sciences. The Division of Mathematics (N) unites leading experts in areas such as Algebra and Algebraic Topology, as well as Partial Differential Equations, Operator Theory and Complex Analysis, Harmonic Analysis and Applications, Inverse Problems and Differential Geometry. We attach great importance to a good, collegial working environment. The department is international with a relatively even gender distribution among employees.

Project description

The research will be in modern algebraic topology, with a focus in homotopy theory. The position is partly funded by the Swedish Research Council as part of the project “Local to global extensions of topological quantum field theories”. It is also possible to work on related topics including and not limited to stable homotopy theory, higher category theory, homological algebra and geometric topology.

Work duties

The main task for a doctoral student is to devote yourself to your doctoral studies, therefore you will be both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.

As a doctoral student you will be a part of a growing research group within an active research environment. Beside working on the project, you will have a possibility to attend seminars, conferences and dedicate part of the time to doctoral studies. The work duties may also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Qualifications

Admission requirements

  • a second-cycle degree, or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the second cycle level, or
  • in some other way has acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad

Special requirements

  • completed courses in mathematics equivalent to 120 credits, of which at least 50 must be at advanced (MSc) level
  • the courses at basic and advanced level should include a degree project corresponding to 30 credits. Special eligibility may be obtained through equivalent studies; this will be assessed in each case

Other requirements

  • knowledge and skills in algebraic topology
  • an assessment of ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems
  • written and oral communication skills
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English

Merits for the position are:

  • knowledge and prior experience in stable homotopy theory and infinity-categories is a strong merit.

Great emphasis will be placed on how the applicant, through his/her experience and competence, is judged to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral studies.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme.
