PhD Candidate (f/m/x) - Regulation of Liver Metabolism by miRNAs

Full time
39 hrs./week

Neuherberg near Munich

At Helmholtz Munich, we develop groundbreaking solutions for a healthier society in a rapidly changing world. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation. Through strong partnerships, we accelerate the transfer of new ideas from the lab to real-life applications, improving lives.

The group of Diabetes Complications from the Institute for Diabetes and Cancer (IDC) (headed by Prof. Stephan Herzig) is currently seeking a highly motivated student (f/m/x) to develop a PhD project on miRNAs with a role in liver metabolism. You will continue our line of research on the miR-379/miR-410 cluster of miRNAs (please see PMID: 42768048).

Our aim is to identify miRNAs involved in the development of insulin resistance and diabetes, as well as in the progression of MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, commonly called fatty liver disease), that could serve as targets for novel RNA therapies.

Your tasks

  • Investigate how miRNAs influence liver metabolism, and plan and run your own experiments.
  • Work with primary liver cells (hepatocytes) from humans and mice, and build cell models for insulin resistance and MASLD.
  • Analyse molecular datasets (e.g. RNA sequencing) and interpret your results.
  • Support in vivo studies together with experienced colleagues.
  • Present your findings at scientific conferences and publish them in peer-reviewed journals.

Your profile

  • A Master’s degree or comparable qualification in biology, biochemistry, physiology or a related natural science.
  • Hands-on lab experience with cell culture and basic molecular methods (RNA and protein isolation, PCR, immunoblotting).
  • You explain results clearly to colleagues in English, in writing and in conversation (about B2), and you ask for input when you need it.

Desirable qualifications

  • First experience in bioinformatics (e.g. R or Python).
  • Experience with in vivo studies.

The doctoral researcher will be integrated in an international and interdisciplinary team that will offer great mentoring and support, facilitating his/her academic growth.

The position is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) through the Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio (CRC/TRR) 205 “The Adrenal: Central Relay in Health and Disease”.

The position has an (initial) fixed term of three years but may be extended under certain circumstances. Remuneration and social security benefits are based on the German Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees at Federal Level (EG 13 50% TV EntgO Bund). In addition, there is also the possibility of receiving an allowance if the applicable conditions are met.

Managing Director Mike Frieser:

„We believe that diversity is the key to groundbreaking research and innovative solutions. Our flexible working models and remote options create a supportive environment for balancing work and family life. For us, contributing to a healthier society in such an inspiring workplace is truly meaningful.“
