Project Description

At the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology, an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Tübingen, the following position is available as soon as possible:

PhD Position in AI in Education: Multimodal Learning Analytics and Adaptive Learning Environments
(m/f/d, E13 TV-L, 75%, limited to three years)

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate with a background in Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Learning Sciences, Educational Research, Data Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field to join our interdisciplinary research team at the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology, University of Tübingen. The successful candidate will contribute to a research program that develops AI systems capable of modeling, assessing, and supporting learners’ attentional, cognitive, and metacognitive processes in real time using multimodal behavioral data. The position is embedded in a growing research initiative at the intersection of artificial intelligence, learning analytics, psychology, and educational research.

A central focus of the project is understanding how learners regulate their attention and learning processes, including phenomena such as mind wandering, metacognitive monitoring, and self-regulated learning. Using multimodal behavioral data, including eye tracking, video recordings, digital trace data, and other behavioral indicators, we aim to develop AI models capable of detecting and modeling these processes in real time.

The project further investigates how such multimodal AI systems can be integrated into adaptive learning environments that provide personalized support based on learners’ attentional and self-regulatory needs. The PhD candidate will design and conduct empirical studies, develop multimodal machine-learning models, investigate the mechanisms underlying attention and learning, and contribute to the development of AI-supported educational technologies.

The successful candidate will work closely with Prof. Dr. Babette Bühler, Tenure-Track Professor for AI in Education, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Trautwein, and collaborate with researchers at the Hector Research Institute and the LEAD Graduate School & Research Network.

What We Expect from You

We are looking for a candidate with a strong academic background, enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research, and a genuine interest in using AI to better understand and support learning. Specifically, we expect:

  • An excellent academic degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Statistics, Psychology, Empirical Educational Research, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in human-centered artificial intelligence, adaptive learning systems, and educational technologies.
  • Programming skills, preferably in Python, or a demonstrated willingness and ability to rapidly develop advanced programming skills.
  • Experience with machine learning, statistical methods, and a strong interest in AI methods.
  • Interest in working with multimodal data (Eye Tracking, Video, Audio, Log Data).
  • Proficiency in English as a working language in an international research team.
  • A willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork.
  • The ability to work independently and a high level of personal commitment.
  • A commitment to continuous professional development in line with the project’s requirements.

In addition, the following qualifications would be considered an asset:

  • Experience with machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, multimodal learning analytics, or related computational methods.
  • Experience designing and conducting field studies, experiments, or user studies.

What We Offer

We provide an inspiring, productive, and collaborative research environment with excellent opportunities for professional and academic development. Specifically, we offer:

  • Comprehensive supervision and a wide range of training opportunities, including methodological training as part of early-career researcher support.
  • The opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, learning analytics, and education.
  • Support for interdisciplinary and international collaborations, such as lab visits and participation in international conferences.
  • Guidance in scientific publishing and the opportunity to share your research with a broader audience.
  • Integration into the LEAD Graduate School & Research Network.
  • Involvement in a dynamic and motivated research team passionate about education and AI.
