Project Description
We are looking for a postdoc to join our team at the Department of Mathematics, Division of Analysis and Probability. Become part of our innovative group and contribute to exciting research in quantum information theory within a collaborative and dynamic environment.
About us
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology has about 200 employees and is one of the largest departments of mathematical sciences in the Nordic countries. The department consists of three divisions: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability, Applied Mathematics and Statistics.
We contribute in a significant way to society by our extensive research and education. The working environment at the department is supportive, stimulating, and international, with a continuous flow of international guests. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all our activities.
About the research project
The postdoctoral researcher will work on fundamental and applied problems in quantum information theory, with the specific project shaped together with the candidate according to their background and interests. Possible directions include quantum Shannon theory, such as capacities of quantum channels, entropic inequalities and resource theories; the structure of entanglement and Bell nonlocality, and their role as resources for information processing; and operator-algebraic methods in quantum information, including von Neumann algebras, commuting-operator models and the mathematical foundations of infinite-dimensional quantum systems. The project aims to produce mathematically rigorous results that also matter for practical quantum communication. This covers rigorous security proofs and key-rate bounds for continuous-variable QKD and device-independent QKD in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, where tools from functional analysis, entropy theory and operator algebras are essential. The candidate will have the freedom to develop independent research lines and to collaborate with national and international partners. We welcome applicants with a strong background in operator algebras, quantum information or related areas of mathematics, physics, or computer science.
The position is funded by a grant to Mizanur Rahaman from WACQT, whose vision is to build a quantum computer in Sweden. For more information, see the homepage of Mizanur Rahaman.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
- A doctoral degree in mathematics, physics or computer science, or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
You are expected to demonstrate excellent potential within research.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
- It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree was obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline (with reduction for documented circumstances such as parental leave or sick leave).
- Experience of research in quantum information theory or related areas of mathematics
- Personal suitability plays an important role in the hiring decision
What you will do
- The main task is to carry out research within the area of quantum information theory, both independently and in collaboration with members of the research group
- There is a possibility to supervise master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent
- There is a possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate/master’s level to a certain extent
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years.
The monthly salary is 44.000 SEK before tax.
The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
