Offer Summary

Linköping University in Sweden seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher in Experimental Hepatology and Metabolism for a two-year full-time position. The role focuses on understanding steatotic liver disease mechanisms through experimental work with human precision-cut liver slices and primary hepatocytes. Responsibilities include conducting molecular biology, biochemical, and cellular metabolic analyses, including stable isotope-labeled nutrient studies for metabolic flux analysis. The researcher will coordinate project activities, manage biobank samples, and collaborate with academic and pharmaceutical partners. Applicants must hold a PhD in Medical Science or a related field, with extensive experience in cell culture, protein analysis (Western blotting, ELISA), and metabolic methods. Strong English skills are required. A recent doctoral degree is advantageous. The position may involve up to 20% teaching duties. Applications are due by November 10, 2026.

Project Description

We have the power of over 50,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting challenges of today. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

Work assignments

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work in a project aimed at improving our understanding of the mechanisms driving the development and progression of steatotic liver disease (SLD). The project focuses on circulating proteins identified as elevated at different stages of SLD and their effects on liver metabolism, cellular signaling, and fibrosis development.

Your main responsibilities will include experimental work using human precision-cut liver slices obtained from surgical specimens, including tissue culture and treatment with recombinant proteins. In addition, you will work with primary human hepatocytes in complementary cell culture models. The project involves studies of intracellular signaling, fibrogenic and inflammatory processes, as well as metabolic functions in liver tissue and hepatocytes using molecular biology, biochemical, and cellular metabolic approaches. You will also design and perform experiments using nutrients labeled with stable isotopes to enable metabolic flux analysis. The position further includes data processing and interpretation, scientific reporting, and participation in the planning, execution, and publication of research findings. You will also take on a coordinating role within the project, acting as the primary point of contact for collaborators from academia and the pharmaceutical industry, and coordinating the collection, processing, and distribution of biobank samples.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

We are looking for someone with

  • A PhD in Medical Science or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in cell culture and molecular biology methods for protein analysis, such as Western blotting, ELISA, and multiplex immunoassays, as well as experience with biochemical and cellular metabolic methods for studying metabolism.
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills.

The following is considered an advantage for the position:

  • Experience in mass spectrometry and metabolic flux analysis.
  • Experience in immunohistochemistry.
  • Knowledge of and practical experience in liver metabolism research.

We are looking for a highly motivated, independent, and detail-oriented researcher with the ability to plan, execute, and analyze experiments in a structured manner. You thrive in a research environment where methods and scientific questions evolve throughout the project and where creativity, perseverance, and an analytical mindset are essential for addressing scientific challenges. You have strong collaborative skills and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

The workplace

You will work at the Division of Diagnostics and Specialist Medicine (DISP), which is part of the Department of Health, Medicine and Caring Sciences (HMV). The research environment conducts translational research focusing on metabolism, chronic liver diseases, and biomarkers. The work is carried out in close collaboration between experimental and clinical research, using studies of human tissue and advanced analytical methods to improve the understanding of disease mechanisms and identify new opportunities for diagnosis and treatment.

The employment

This employment is a temporary contract of two years with the possibility of extension up to a total maximum of three years. The employment is full-time. Starting by agreement.

Background screening may come to be carried out before any decision on employment is made.

Salary and employment benefits
