Offer Summary

Uppsala University in Sweden invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral position in Computational Materials Chemistry at the Ångström Laboratory. The role focuses on improving understanding of ion transport mechanisms in ceramic-polymer composite electrolytes for solid-state batteries. Responsibilities include developing computationally efficient multiscale models using statistical thermodynamics and dynamical methods like molecular dynamics. The position involves collaboration with LEPMI at Grenoble INP in France, requiring a research stay of approximately two months annually. Candidates must hold a recent PhD in Chemistry, Physics, or Materials Science, with strong expertise in computational chemistry, statistical thermodynamics, and collaboration with experimental researchers. The contract is temporary for two years, starting January 1, 2027, or as agreed. Applications are due by November 30, 2026.

Project Description

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website.

Duties

The goal of the research project is to improve the understanding of mechanisms governing ion transport in ceramic-polymer composite electrolytes for solid-state batteries and provide guidelines for developing materials with improved ionic conductivity. The work focuses on method development and on developing and applying computationally efficient multiscale models, with particular emphasis on statistical thermodynamics and probability-based dynamical methods, such as molecular dynamics and kinetic Monte Carlo, to study transport within and between the different material phases. Atomistic simulations and experimental data will be used to develop and validate the models, with particular emphasis on the role of interphases in ion transport.

The project is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and will be conducted within the Structural Chemistry research programme at Uppsala University which encompasses both Computational Materials Chemistry and the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre (ÅABC). The postdoctoral researcher will be an active member of both research environments. The project is conducted in collaboration with LEPMI at Grenoble INP in France. The work also includes a research stay of approximately two months per year at Grenoble INP.

Requirements

For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD degree or an international equivalent within the field of Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or other for the position relevant fields, within a maximum of three (3) years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, maternity leave, in trade unions, etc.

The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. Greater importance will be attached to the quality of individual scientific work, than to the number of publications. The applicant is expected to have a very good knowledge of written and spoken English.

A solid background in computational chemistry methods spanning different length and time scales, including dynamical simulations, and a strong foundation in statistical thermodynamics are required. The applicant must have experience of and ability to collaborate with experimental researchers, the ability to build effective teams, and leadership abilities that support the supervision of PhD and master’s students. The ability to communicate science clearly, both orally and in writing, is also required. These abilities will carry substantial weight in the assessment.

Additional qualifications

Experience in method development and modelling of materials, transport mechanisms and interphases is advantageous, as are programming skills and experience with machine learning.

About the employment

The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Full-time position. Starting date 2027-01-01 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
