Project Description
Postdoctoral position in impacts of extreme weather events
Are you interested in working on impacts of extreme weather events, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden’s most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geoscience. It offers a broad range of expertise that can contribute to solving important societal issues.
Earth is a dynamic and constantly changing planet. To understand how this planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of disciplines, including rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development.
Our research combines natural sciences and technology with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. More than 300 people from over 30 countries work at the department, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland.
Our six research divisions:
• Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Palaeobiology • Wind Energy
For more information see: Earth sciences
The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme’s science can be found at: LUVAL.
You will contribute to the EU project "CLOSER" focussing on the compilation of data and the attribution of extreme weather events and their impacts. You will be part of the Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes (climes).
Duties
You will work with data collection on and analysis of socioeconomic effects of extreme climate events in the mid-latitudes. Several categories of events are of interest, such as heatwaves, cold spells, wildfires, storms, and droughts. Similarly, there are several types of data that can be used, including reanalyses, remote sensing, climate models, impact databases and textual data. The overarching aim is to link the physical events with exposure and impacts. Teaching/supervising duties up to 20% are possible on a voluntary basis. You will be based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences in Uppsala, but will be expected to travel both nationally and internationally.
Requirements
PhD degree in climate science, meteorology, natural hazards, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, data science or related disciplines or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the above subjects. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
Previous experience in at least one of the following areas is required: impacts of extreme weather, remote sensing data for extreme climate events, computational linguistics, or machine learning in disaster management.
You must also demonstrate the ability to communicate your research effectively through peer-reviewed articles published in leading international academic journals and possess excellent written and spoken English skills. Strong collaborative skills are essential, as the position involves cooperation with various international research groups and centres.
Additional qualifications
Experience in at least one of the following areas is required, while experience spanning two or more of these areas is considered particularly meritorious: impacts of extreme weather, remote sensing data for extreme climate events, computational linguistics, or machine learning for disaster management. Such experience should be documented, for example through peer-reviewed publications.
We also place great value on a strong publication record in international peer-reviewed journals. The ability to take initiative, work independently, and drive projects forward is considered an asset. An interest in developing and testing new ideas is also highly desirable.
About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date 1st March 2027 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
