Offer Summary
The University of Bergen invites applications for a three-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within the Čapek group at the Michael Sars Centre in Bergen, Norway. The role focuses on investigating mechanisms of temperature robustness in fish embryos, combining transcriptomics, bioinformatics, molecular assays, and microscopy to understand developmental signaling under thermal variation. Candidates must hold a PhD in developmental or molecular biology with documented experience in transcriptomics and experimental techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9 or microinjection. The position offers an annual salary of NOK 685,900, enrollment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and opportunities for qualifying work including potential extensions for research stays abroad. Applicants should demonstrate independent research capabilities and strong communication skills in English.

Project Description
UiB - Knowledge that shapes society
UiB shall be among Europe's leading universities, internationally recognized for high quality in research and education. As a societal institution, we shall contribute to sustainable and democratic development and be an attractive and inclusive place to study and work.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow position
At the Michael Sars Centre, there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within Mechanisms of temperature robustness in fish embryos, in the Čapek group. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years and is funded by the University of Bergen.
About the project/work tasks:
How do fish embryos maintain coordinated development when temperature changes the rates of molecular and cellular processes? Our research investigates the mechanisms that make embryonic development robust to temperature variation and the conditions under which this robustness breaks down. We combine established fish models with marine fish species to understand how embryos from different thermal environments respond to temperature change.
The successful applicant will investigate how temperature affects developmental signalling and gene expression and how these responses relate to cell-fate specification, tissue organisation and embryonic development. The work will combine transcriptomic experiments and bioinformatic analyses with molecular assays, genome editing and microscopy of live and fixed embryos. A central objective is to connect transcriptional responses to developmental outcomes and functionally test candidate mechanisms of temperature robustness.
Working closely with the group leader and other lab members, the successful applicant will develop an independent research project within this framework, building on their expertise, scientific interests and ideas.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) in developmental biology, molecular biology, marine biology or a related field, or must have submitted their doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
- Documented research experience in transcriptomics is required, including experimental design, practical execution of experiments, bioinformatic analysis and biological interpretation of the resulting data.
- Documented research experience in experimental developmental biology is required. Relevant techniques include, for example, microinjection, immunostaining, CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing and microscopy of live and fixed samples. Experience in all of these techniques is not required.
- Research experience with fish and/or marine organisms is an advantage.
- Research experience in evolutionary developmental biology, comparative developmental biology, or developmental responses to environmental variation, including temperature, is an advantage.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
- Applicants must have good written and spoken English skills.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
Special requirements for the position
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.
About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:
The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. Candidates who lack teaching experience and/or other qualifying competencies will be given the opportunity to undertake qualifying work, either during the fixed-term appointment period or through a possible extension of the appointment period (up to a maximum of four years in total). The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.
Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a progress plan.
It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.
We can offer:
- a good and professionally stimulating working environment
- position as postdoctoral fellow (code 1352 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 685 900 upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant
- enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
- good welfare benefits
Your application must include:
- a brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position
- a detailed justification of your qualifications in relation to the listed requirements, explaining how you meet each criterion. Additionally, you should address the "advantages" mentioned above, as these will be taken into account when ranking the candidates
- the names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be the main advisor from the PhD programme
- CV
- transcripts and diplomas. If you have not yet completed your PhD degree, please submit a statement from your institution confirming that the thesis has been submitted
- relevant certificates/references
