Project Description

About the role

We are looking for a Research Assistant to join the School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, within the Division of Microbiology and Infection. You will support the genetics and genomics components of an exciting research project, undertaking laboratory-based research in molecular cloning, RNA isolation and preparation for RNA sequencing, transcriptional reporter assays, and the establishment of a mini-bioreactor system. Working independently within agreed objectives and with guidance from the Principal Investigator and project team, you will analyse and interpret experimental data, troubleshoot laboratory methods and maintain accurate research records.

You will collaborate closely with the Postdoctoral Research Associate, technical colleagues and research partners to deliver high-quality outcomes. You will also contribute to presentations, reports, publications and future funding applications; support laboratory operations and equipment maintenance; and help train students and new laboratory members. This is an opportunity to develop your research expertise within a collaborative University community committed to discovery, innovation and making a positive difference.

About you

You will hold an MSc in Microbiology or a related discipline and have experience of bacterial genetics, including genetic manipulation, cloning and the generation of promoter reporter strains. You will bring extensive experience of working with Staphylococcus aureus, together with experience in screening and characterising bacterial transposon mutant libraries. You will also be able to design, conduct and interpret in vitro assays, apply appropriate statistical analyses, and develop, optimise and troubleshoot complex laboratory methods and experimental systems. Evidence of research productivity through conference presentations or peer-reviewed publications is essential. A PhD in Microbiology or Genetics, or one nearing completion, would be advantageous.

You will combine excellent analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills with the ability to communicate complex information clearly in writing and verbally. You will be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively, prioritising competing demands and contributing positively to shared research objectives. Experience of supporting students or new laboratory colleagues, and basic budget management experience, would be welcomed.
