Project Description

The role

The successful applicant will join the School of Geographical Sciences, but will work across the University and with cross-disciplinary research institutes such as the Cabot Institute for the Environment, the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health, and Jean Golding Institute for Data Science. We are open to applicants in all areas of climate change and health, but evidence of strong connections and understanding of both the ‘climate change’ and ‘health’ sectors is important. We would welcome applications from candidates with interests in the primary application of data science and AI to research questions in climate change and health.

Research interests might include: human health for different climate and adaption scenarios; fine-scale weather/climate hazard modelling relevant for health; different health, data, and AI models that complement and add to our existing ones, for instance related to lifetime exposures or impacts on chronic health outcomes; linked data and digital health; lived experience; different types of methods of assessment for climate and health impacts.

What will you be doing?

  • Develop and sustain funding support for their own areas of research.
  • Independently identify relevant research objectives for a research team to pursue and, where appropriate, contribute effectively to faculty research programmes, ensuring that outputs meet the quality and quantity expectations for the School and/or Faculty.
  • Lead research funding bids and research teams.
  • Take a leading role in the successful dissemination, nationally and internationally, of research findings.
  • Develop knowledge of, and contacts with, appropriate funding bodies external to the University.
  • Provide expert advice on research issues to research fellows and other colleagues.
  • Play a leading role in, and/or help to create, networks of researchers active in their area of scholarship and help create opportunities for collaborative work with other research centres.
  • Peer review manuscripts for publication and/or research bids.
  • Participate actively in the development of the School’s research strategy.
  • Make a significant contribution to the School’s research reputation and income.
  • Develop effective activities to achieve engagement with research, and/or impact beyond academia.
  • Where appropriate, develop relations with communities relevant to the research, and public and private enterprises in order to capitalise on intellectual property and collaboration.

You should apply if

  • You have extensive academic experience, which includes contributions in research, related leadership and administration.
  • Role holders will be expected to be leading collaborative research bids, research teams or scholastic projects (e.g. editing journals or academic books).
  • You will have an established reputation within your academic discipline and will be producing research of national, if not international, quality.
  • You will be making a significant leadership and/or management contribution within your school or the wider University.
  • You will have completed your PhD and will have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, research, teaching, and administration appropriate to your career stage.

The role of Research Fellow in Climate Change and Health is a fixed 3-year Pathway 2 position. We expect the role holder will develop their research including actively seeking opportunities to fund their research beyond the 3 years and publish their research findings, contribute to doctoral supervision, and support the activities of the School in an administrative role.
