Project Description

The Scientific Computing Center is the Information Technology Center of KIT.

The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) aims to systematically catalogue and make accessible the data holdings of science and research, ensure their long-term preservation, and make them accessible. It is being established as an interconnected structure of consortia that act on their own initiative.

Within NFDI-MatWerk, a reliable digital platform for materials science and nanoscience is being developed, enabling the digital representation of materials data and specific metadata. Services for the easy storage, sharing, searching, and analysis of data and metadata are being developed and made available to researchers. Furthermore, data from scientific groups distributed throughout Germany should be accessible through a knowledge-graph-based infrastructure in such a way that fast and complex search queries and analyses become possible.

Your tasks

In the “Data Exploitation Methods” department of the Scientific Computing Center (SCC), we develop innovative software solutions for the NFDI to make the handling of research data simple and user-friendly.

Within the framework of NFDI-MatWerk, you will work on the following topics:

  • You will develop a tool for automatic metadata extraction and mapping, optimally tailored to the needs of researchers in the field of materials science.
  • You will use LLMs to support semantic extraction from unstructured or semi-structured texts.
  • You will design new methods and workflows to improve the analysis and visualization of large data collections.
  • You will participate in teaching activities (supervision of students).
  • You will publish at least one scientific article per year in academic journals and present your results at conferences.

Your profile

You have:

  • A completed university degree (Diplom (University)/Master’s) in STEM subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology).
  • Ideally, a completed PhD.
  • Experience in software development and LLMs.
  • Preferably, experience in the field of technical data and metadata management.
  • Strategic, creative, and goal-oriented thinking skills that support your proactive way of working, which you bring to a team that works in the same way.
  • Very good communication, presentation, and publication skills in English (spoken and written).
