Project Description

A leadership opportunity has arisen for an experienced specialist radiologist to advance their career by heading up the Diagnostic Imaging service team at the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital (QVSH), Cambridge.

We are a large, multidisciplinary small animal referral hospital, sitting within the University of Cambridge Department of Veterinary Medicine. The Hospital operates as a commercially competitive hospital, whilst remaining central to supporting teaching of veterinary undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as delivering and supporting veterinary clinical and one health research. The QVSH also works collaboratively with our small animal and equine primary care practices and is supported by our in-house Clinical Pathology and Anatomical Pathology services.

This role will be head of the Imaging service within the QVSH, responsible for leading, developing and supporting a high standard of clinical service provision in the Imaging team. The role holder will be responsible for ensuring this team works effectively as part of the wider referral hospital. Supporting clinical research is an important part of this role, as required for postgraduate training programmes, whilst balancing research impacts on the wider hospital requirement to provide a financially viable service.

The department currently consists of 4 part-time Imaging Diplomates (in addition to this post), 3 ECVDI residents, 1 Imaging Intern and 5 radiographers. The service provides referral level MRI, CT, Ultrasound and Radiography to the QVSH both in and out of hours, as well as offering advice and support to our small animal and equine primary care practices.

The role primarily provides a specialist diagnostic imaging clinical service while contributing to the clinical teaching of undergraduate (Year 6) veterinary students and postgraduate Clinical Training Scholars working within the QVSH. The postholder will support the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment in diagnostic imaging, in collaboration with academic colleagues. Although this is not primarily a teaching post, there will be opportunities to contribute to both clinical and didactic teaching. Time will be allocated for the administrative and service leadership components of the role. The role holder will be required to participate in an out-of-hours rota, for which an additional payment is provided.

Applicants should be a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (Dip ECVDI) or American College of Veterinary Radiology (Dip ACVR) and be a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) or hold a veterinary degree registerable with the RCVS. Significant experience of working in a multidisciplinary veterinary referral hospital is essential along with in depth understanding of the operation of a commercial veterinary referral hospital.

We offer a supportive and engaging environment with generous paid annual leave (41 days including the public holidays). In addition, we are able to provide competitive staff benefits and services, including family friendly policies, numerous discounts on shopping, health care, financial services, and public transport. We also offer a generous pension scheme, annual CPD allowance and tax-efficient bicycle, car lease and charity-giving schemes.
