Project Description

Visiting Lecturer - Lighting Technology

Job description

Rate of pay: £21.84 per hour, plus 17.66% accrued holiday per total value

Working hours: Flexible

Duration of contract: Flexible

UH Music in the School of Creative Arts is seeking to recruit a lighting engineer with experience of lighting stages for bands and events to a visiting lecturer position. The successful applicant will work closely with our first and second year students ( L4 and L5 ) as part of their Live Sound, Lighting and Performance Technology BSc programme, and will support third year (L6) students as they prepare their final year showcase projects. Additionally, lighting support and supervision will be required at a small number of one off events and throughout our final year show, which runs for three consecutive days in early May.

UH Music offers a friendly, collegiate working atmosphere as part of an established team of professionals, within the substantial, multi-disciplinary School of Creative Arts. We have well-resourced teaching facilities, including a comprehensively equipped sound and lighting stage; and a range of staff benefits and training / development programmes are available.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

The work will involve teaching sessions and small group tutorials, and practical workshops in our fully equipped light and sound stage; as well as setting and grading student assessments, for a total of approximately 20 students, using the existing programme documentation to set the briefs and to assess the work against specified learning outcomes. The contract offered to the successful applicant will reflect teaching hours, additional time spent in preparation and assessment, and additional hours to cover events and shows. An experienced current member of staff will be appointed to act as a mentor for the first Semester, and to assist with setting assignments etc. The contract will be offered for one Semester initially, with a view to a rolling annual contract; and there may be potential for the role to grow in the future.

The post offered will involve teaching on one day each week throughout January - May 2027 with occasional additional days to cover events and shows. The total contract will be for approximately 150 hours, with about half of this reflecting preparation and assessment work, some of which can potentially be completed on a flexible basis from home, using our VLE system, StudyNet, which runs on the Canvas platform.

Skills/Qualifications Required:

  • Have substantial proven experience in the industry.
  • Operate Avolites consoles and standard lighting fixtures safely and with a high degree of proficiency.
  • Effectively pass their knowledge and understanding onto students.
  • Effectively and consistently assess how well students can demonstrate their learning through coursework submissions and lighting projects.
  • Experience with projection technologies such as Resolume would be helpful, but not essential.

Required:

  • Demonstrable experience of the live music and events industry.
  • Demonstrable understanding and experience of working with Avolites lighting consoles and associated standard fixtures and fittings.
  • Strong general IT skills and experience of standard MS Office applications.
  • Commitment to teaching for one full day per week, ( 4-6 hours from 10.00am with a one hour lunch break) with flexibility to schedule additional days or part days to cover events and shows.
  • Commitment to undertaking UH staff onboarding and training processes.
  • Strong reliability, organisation and time management.
  • Availability to start work from January 25th 2027 and work according to the weekly schedule through to 1st June 2027.

Desirable:

  • Experience of teaching at FE or HE level.
  • A good Bachelors or higher degree in a relevant area.
  • Experience of Live sound and associated technologies.
  • Experience of Resolume and associated projection technologies.

Closing Date: 11th January 2027
