The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO‑KNAW) invites MSc or HBO students to join the ClipsMicro internship in Wageningen. The role focuses on microbial ecology to improve soil health, boost carbon sequestration, and cut greenhouse‑gas emissions. Interns will run pot experiments in climate chambers, collect plant exudates, and test their ability to promote Biological Nitrification Inhibition (BNI). Tasks include culturing and maintaining microbial cultures, and may involve metabolomics and molecular biology work. Project Description:

Are you ready to dive into the world of microbial ecology applied to agricultural research? Join us in the "ClipsMicro" project at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO) and play a crucial role in developing nature-based agricultural management strategies. Our primary goal is to enhance soil quality, increase carbon sequestration, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This exciting project combines science and collaboration with stakeholders, with a strong focus on soil microbial ecology and biogeochemistry.

Position Description:

As a student in this project, you will take on a pivotal role. Your responsibilities will include conducting pot experiments in climate chambers, collecting plant exudates, and testing their capacity to promote Biological Nitrification Inhibition (BNI). You will be working with assays with microbial cultures, cultivating, maintaining, and ensuring their purity. Additionally, you may be involved in metabolomics and molecular biology experiments. This project offers an opportunity for MSc. students to develop their research questions and contribute to the future of sustainable agriculture in the Netherlands.

Qualifications:

  • Background in biological or soil sciences;
  • Laboratory experience is an advantage;
  • Strong self-motivation and the ability to work independently;
  • Proficiency in English (English is the working language at NIOO).
