It is funded largely by the Autonomous Province of Trento and… The Bruno Kessler Foundation (Fondazione Bruno Kessler, FBK) is a research foundation in Trento, established in 1962 as the Istituto Trentino di Cultura and reorganised under its present name in 2007. It is funded largely by the Autonomous Province of Trento and named after Bruno Kessler, the provincial president who founded both the institute and the University of Trento. FBK employs around 700 researchers across two broad areas. Its technology centres work on artificial intelligence and machine learning, natural language processing, cybersecurity, digital health, sensors and devices, microelectronics and quantum technologies; its humanities centres cover religious studies and Italian-German historical studies. The foundation is one of the most active Italian participants in European research framework programmes, holds a substantial patent portfolio, and maintains a long collaboration with the University of Trento in doctoral training.
