Its main office is in Dwingeloo, in the Dwingelderveld National Park in the province of Drenthe, and it is one of the national research institutes of NWO-I, the institutes organisation of the Dutch Research Council. Its history goes back to the first Dutch observation of the 21-centimetre radiation of neutral hydrogen in 1951, and the institute has been at the forefront of radio astronomy ever since, from the Dwingeloo and Westerbork telescopes to today's international arrays. ASTRON designs, builds and operates radio telescopes and develops the technology that lets astronomers see farther, faster and at more frequencies. It operates the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and LOFAR, the Low Frequency Array spread across Europe, and it is a key partner in the Square Kilometre Array. Its research groups work on galaxy evolution, pulsars and transients, cosmology and the epoch of reionisation, and on receiver, antenna and signal-processing technology, some of which is also applied to satellite tracking and other remote-sensing applications. ASTRON recruits PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, staff astronomers, engineers and software developers, and offers internships and graduation projects.
