It is named after Luca Marenzio, the late-Renaissance madrigalist born near Brescia around 1553. The conservatory teaches instrumental and vocal performance, composition, conducting, early music, jazz, electronic music and music education, together with the theoretical and historical disciplines that accompany them. Alongside its degree programmes it runs pre-academic courses, masterclasses and a concert season, and it maintains a detached site at Darfo Boario Terme in the Val Camonica. Its teaching posts are filled through public competition in the manner of all Italian state conservatories.
